Creating Your Magical New Christmas Tradition

The festive season in Canada is filled with familiar favourites, from Tim Hortons hot chocolate after a snowy toboggan run to the scent of butter tarts wafting through the kitchen. But for many Canadian families, a new magical tradition has taken root: The Elf on the Shelf®.

If you’ve seen these mischievous elves peeking out from mantelpieces on Instagram and TikTok or appearing in local shops and are curious about how it all works, you’re in the right place. Here’s your friendly guide to starting your very own Scout Elf tradition!

The Elf on the Shelf

What is The Elf on the Shelf®?

Santa’s Scout Elves are magical visitors sent from the North Pole. Their mission? To observe children’s behaviour during the Christmas season and help Santa manage his Nice List.

Each official Scout Elf arrives in a charming keepsake box, which includes:

  • A beautifully illustrated storybook that explains your elf’s job and the magic behind it
  • An official adoption certificate for your family to personalize
  • Your very own Scout Elf, ready for daily adventures!

Children love being on their best behaviour while their elf is around, just to make sure Santa hears all about it.

Why Are They Called “Scout Elves”?

The Scout Elf is just that, a scout for Santa! These special elves keep an eye on things in homes across Canada, whether it’s in a bustling Toronto condo, a snowy farmhouse in Saskatchewan, or a cozy cabin in the Laurentians. Each night, they fly back to the North Pole to let Santa know how things are going.

Why Is It Called a “Scout Elf”?

That’s what Father Christmas calls them, because Scout Elves are specially chosen to scout out all the lovely (and sometimes cheeky!) behaviour going on in homes during the Christmas season.

They fly back to the North Pole each night to keep Santa in the loop, so he knows exactly who belongs on the Nice List.

How Do I Get Started?

It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3 and it starts with a sprinkle of Christmas magic:

  1. Adopt an official Scout Elf from an authorised Canadian retailer.
  1. Read the illustrated Elf on the Shelf® storybook together as a family, it’s included inside the keepsake adoption box.
  1. Pick a magical name for your elf. This is the moment that activates their North Pole magic!

And Bob’s your uncle! You’ll soon have a brand-new festive tradition that the kids will look forward to each and every Christmas!

Elf Do’s & Don’ts (Straight from the North Pole)

  • Elves don’t speak, but they are fantastic listeners. Your child can whisper wishes or secrets each day.
  • On Christmas Eve, your elf flies home to help Santa prep for the big night. But don’t worry, they’ll be back next year!

What Happens After Adoption?

Now the fun begins! Every morning, your Scout Elf will appear in a new spot, ready to surprise and delight. From silly setups to simple placements, their daily antics become a cherished part of your holiday routine.

These elves bring smiles to even the chilliest of Canadian mornings as your children will find them snacking on maple syrup or hiding in the cereal cupboard.
